GETTING YOUR HOME READY FOR WINTER

As the Winter months approach, we're here to provide you with valuable insights to help you save money and efficiently heat your homes.

These simple steps can make a significant difference to your comfort and your heating bills.

TEST YOUR HEATING BEFORE WINTER

As we gear up for winter, it's a great time to give your heating system a test run before the colder weather arrives. This proactive step can help you identify and address any issues ahead of time.

To test your heating, ensure the heating programmer is turned on and increase the set temperature to high (28°C for example). This should result in the heating system being activated. Remember, if you have underfloor heating, it can take up to 4 hours to heat up dependent on the system you have.

If this hasn’t worked, please click this link to report an issue to our team.  We will ask a few simple questions to diagnose what the problem might be and help to get your system working before winter arrives.

Please note that With Energy are responsible for the heat supply up to and including your Heat Interface Unit (HIU). If you encounter any concerns or issues concerning your Tertiary Network—comprising elements like mixer taps, radiators, and underfloor heating it is recommended to seek assistance from an independent plumber or your building management team, if applicable.

HELPFUL ENERGY SAVING TIPS

Layer Up and Block Draughts:

Before reaching for the thermostat, simple measures such as closing doors and curtains can retain heat efficiently. To tackle draughts, consider installing thick curtains and using draught excluders or seals around windows and doors.  Sealing any drafts around doors, windows, and other opening can prevent warm air from escaping and cold air from entering. This keeps your home warmer and reduces the workload on your heating system.

Master Your Heating Controls:

Knowing how to use the heating programmer and thermostat can help ensure your home is heated efficiently. Don’t forget to turn it on and check the batteries work!

Consider reducing your thermostat by just one degree as this can lead to a decrease in consumption. Think also about when you are at home to try to make sure your heating system is off when you don’t need it.

How to Use Your Thermostat Efficiently for Winter Heating

Winter can bring high heating costs, but with a few adjustments to how you use your thermostat, you can stay warm and save money. Here’s a general guide on the best way to use your thermostat during the colder months:

·       Set Your Thermostat to an Efficient Temperature

o   Daytime Temperature: Aim to keep your thermostat set between 18-21°C (64-70°F) while you’re at home during the day. This range is typically comfortable for most people and helps keep energy usage down.

o   Nighttime Temperature: Lowering your thermostat by 2-3°C (36-37°F) at night (or when you're away) can lead to significant savings. A recommended nighttime setting is around 15-18°C (59-64°F).

·       Utilise a Programmable Thermostat

o   Scheduling: Program your thermostat to automatically lower the temperature when you're asleep or away and raise it before you wake up or return home. This reduces the need for manual adjustments and optimises energy use.

o   Avoid Constant Adjustments: Constantly changing the thermostat settings can lead to higher energy consumption. Instead, set a schedule that matches your daily routine.

·       Zone Heating

o   Focus on Key Areas: If you have a zoned heating system, focus on heating the rooms you use most and lower the temperature in less frequently used areas, like guest rooms or storage spaces.

·       Take Advantage of Natural Heat

o   Use Sunlight: Open curtains and blinds during the day to let sunlight naturally warm your home, especially in rooms with south-facing windows. Close them at night to insulate and retain heat.

·       Avoid Overheating

o   Don’t Overcompensate: If you feel cold, resist the urge to turn the thermostat way up. Instead, try adding layers of clothing or using blankets. Overheating your home can lead to wasted energy and higher bills.

o   Keep a Consistent Temperature: Maintain a consistent temperature rather than cranking up the heat for short periods. This helps avoid energy spikes and keeps costs lower.

·       Use Thermostat Features Wisely

o   Eco Mode: If your thermostat has an “Eco” or “Energy Saver” mode, use it to maintain energy-efficient temperatures automatically.

o   Smart Thermostats: Consider investing in a smart thermostat that learns your habits and adjusts the temperature automatically for maximum efficiency.

·       Monitor and Adjust

o   Review Your Usage: Periodically check your energy usage to see if your settings are saving you money. Make small adjustments if needed to optimise your thermostat settings.

By following these tips, you can use your thermostat more efficiently, keeping your home comfortable throughout the winter while also saving on your heating bills.

MAINTAIN A POSITIVE BALANCE

With winter approaching, energy consumption naturally rises therefore we encourage you to stay consistent with your payments. By doing so, you’re ensuring your With Energy account is in good standing, both in the colder months and beyond.

Please remember, if you are a Pay As You Go (PAYG) customer, top-up payments may take 3-4 hours to credit your account. If your balance is low, be mindful of this to avoid risking the loss of supply while the top-up is being processed.

If you require assistance with paying your bills, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us to discuss the available payment options. Alternatively, for independent guidance and advice regarding financial difficulties, there are several organisations that can provide support including StepChange and the National Debtline.
